If you pay taxes to Horry County, you can now go online to see how the county spends your money. South Carolina’s comptroller general's office wants to make sure you know just how your tax dollars are being spent. And Horry County taxpayers are now just a click away from that answer.
Horry County’s Web site is described as a gateway to online services. And one of those services now includes access to the county's check register information. Public Information Officer Lisa Bourcier said the county writes about 13,000 checks a year. "We’ll write checks for our light bills, we'll order office supplies, so there are a lot of different things that we do."
You can also pay your taxes online, search public records, and even see who's been booked into the detention center.
But for people like June Marcus, who turns 81 on Tuesday, having the check register or access to dozens of other online services, is not something that's likely to change the way she does business with the county. “I pay my taxes but I pay them by mail, I have a distrust of the internet only because I think being born during the depression, you have an idea that cash is best.” Marcus said she has a healthy interest in the internet, but when it comes to the county's check register; she doesn't feel like there's anything she can do once the check is written, so looking at it won't change anything. Plus, she said she knows just how to get in touch with someone if she has an issue. "I’d call them on the phone and wait for them to answer, which sometimes takes a long time."
Marcus is not alone, so the county does make it possible for people without internet access to get the information they need. Bourcier said, "We do have various satellite county offices throughout the county, we have one on the south end, Myrtle Beach, Little River and so we are trying to push those county services out to people to make it more convenient for them to come and pay their taxes and do their normal work." Bourcier adds the county is always looking at new technology and ways to make services more accessible so the county's online gateway is likely to expand.
Horry County joins Surfside Beach and Myrtle Beach as municipalities that are opening up the books to taxpayers with online check registers.
