Bypassing construction zones only a click away

FLORENCE - The AAA auto club says a few more Americans will be traveling away from home for Thanksgiving this year, though most people are making their holiday treks by car.

Ground zero for holiday travel this year will once again be Interstates like I-95 in Florence County.

Literally millions of travelers are expected to drive at least some portion of the corridor that runs from Miami to New York City during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Fortunately, road crews took a break this week from the repaving project on I-95 that has created some back-ups in the Pee Dee recently.

We do want to alert you to a pair of other traffic troublespots in the Carolinas.

If you're driving west on I-40 - be prepared for a major detour through the mountains starting at Asheville and ending in Tennessee. That’s where a massive rockslide closed the interstate in both directions beginning 24 miles west of Asheville all the way to just east of Knoxville. The detour route is more than 50 miles longer and you can count an additional 45 minutes to an hour of driving time – so you’ll want to factor that in to your travel plans.

Also - if you're heading up I-85 in North Carolina beware of a section of the Interstate near High Point. Crews are building a new bypass on U.S. 311. And while no work will occur during the peak travel times this week, the right lane in each direction will remain closed during the holiday rush.

One other construction zone you’ll want to be aware of – Interstate 20 – around Augusta – where crews are just finishing up a major widening project.

If you are headed out on the road this week - there's a great resource on the internet for tracking traffic conditions and construction delays no matter where you are headed - just log on to the Federal Highway Administration’s website at www.fhwa.gov.

There you’ll find an interactive map with links to construction alerts in all fifty states.

It’s a great way to save time and money.
