The spirit of Thanksgiving truly came to life at one local elementary school Monday.
Dewey L. Carter Elementary in Florence held its annual Thanksgiving festival.
Students and teachers worked to create teepees, traditional Thanksgiving clothing, canoes and meals.
The school also had live animals including a turkey, a donkey and sheep, all in the hopes of helping to recreate the feeling of the original Thanksgiving celebration.
Teachers and school officials say they organized the event to not only provide some entertainment for the students, but also to serve as a teaching tool at the same time.
"I think that they're hopefully taking a little bit of time to reflect and be thankful for what they have," said teacher Teresa Jackson.
"It's so different these days from what it was back then, so I'm hoping they're taking time to reflect on how good they actually have it now as opposed to how hard it was when the Pilgrims first came," Jackson said.
This was the fifth year for the Thanksgiving festival at the school.
Teachers say they try to add more elements to the celebration each year.
