The Senior Citizens Association in Florence County has received several donations from the community for its Thanksgiving Blessing 2009, which will provide meals for local senior citizens.
The donations will allow more than 150 Lake City senior members to enjoy a planned program, a nutritious meal, socialization and entertainment from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday.
The donations also will allow 250 homebound seniors to receive a catered Thanksgiving dinner delivered to their home.
The association has received the following donations for the project: $3,850 from state Sen. Hugh Leatherman, $1,500 from Florence County, $1,500 from the city of Lake City, $1,000 from the city of Florence, $1,00 from Dr. and Mrs. Edward Floyd, $1,000 from Mr. and Mrs. Sherwin Welch, and other contributions from local supporters.
The project was the brainstorm of Florence city councilman Bill Bradham and received immediate support from Sen. Hugh Leatherman and businessman Bubby Floyd.
In addition, Food Lion stores in the chain’s Florence District have donated $1,500 worth of gift cards and 1,000 napkins with the Food Lion logo to be used at the events. Fourteen stores are in the Florence District, which includes Florence, Darlington, Bishopville, Sumter, Bennettsville, Dillon and Marion. Food Lion also will allow store associates to devote volunteer time to help serve at the planned meal at both senior centers.
McCall Farms will be providing canned goods and other Thanksgiving trimmings.
The association is asking all senior members from both senior centers to call the Leatherman Senior Center in Florence at (843) 669-6761 and the Lake City Senior Center at (843) 394-2432 to make reservations.
Annual membership is $25, and membership will expire on each member’s anniversary date. Active membership is for any person age 50 years and older. This membership includes use of the senior center, newsletters, the annual membership luncheon, special events, and opportunities to participate in activities and classes at a reduced rate. This does not include the use of the building for private events and functions.
