Oyster Roast supports Hartsville athletes

The 5th Annual Red Fox Oyster Roast and Shrimp Fest will be 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at J. Michael’s Grill & Raw Bar, 636 Poole St., Hartsville. All proceeds support Hartsville High School (HHS) athletics.

“When I first was hired as the athletics director, I wanted to do two major fundraisers for the athletic department that would be fun for the community,” HHS Athletics Director Phyllis Griggs said. “One in the spring and one in the fall.”

The event has raised as much as $6,000 in the past, though the seafood cost is higher this time of year compared to the spring event.

Griggs has used the money to purchase uniforms, weight equipment, food for away trips and other sporting equipment as well as to help with camp tuition.

Griggs enlists locals to do the cooking. She said she has a great support group helping with the project.

Charles Holcombe will prepare the oysters. Other food will include fried and steamed shrimp, low country boil, hushpuppies and catfish stew.

“Sandi Anderson and Lea Saunders have been with me from the very beginning and continue to be the foundation for the committees,” Griggs said.

Entertainment for the event will be provided by Dan E. Lockemy at the Beach and Billy Scott & The Prophets.

“[Billy Scott] loves to come. He says we have great food and have a lot of fun,” Griggs said.

J. Michael’s has been home to the event since its inception.

Owner Libby Schmitt has been a great supporter, Griggs said. In the initial planning stages, Schmitt brought in Dan. E. Lockemy, and he added a lot to the planning. Schmitt’s son played football and basketball for the Red Foxes and now plays football at Charleston Southern University.

“We block off the street, and with the band it is a great time to come out on a Saturday,” Griggs said. “We have a lot of people who really look forward to this event each year.”

Tickets are $30 each, and the ticket holder will be given five drink tickets. After those five drinks, each drink will be $1. Tickets can be purchased at HobNob Gourmet, J. Michael’s, Hartsville High main office, First Citizens Bank or from Hartsville High coaching staff.
