LAKE CITY — Lake City Rotary Club members recently heard words from local pastor to reflect on during the Thanksgiving season.
“We all should give thanks,” said Pastor Donnie Witherspoon of Cades Baptist Church. Witherspoon was the speaker at this past Friday’s Thanksgiving program sponsored by the Lake City Rotary Club.
Witherspoon said that if people live long enough, there will be times of trials, but it is wonderful to have a spirit of thanksgiving in the heart. It is important to give thanks not only during the Thanksgiving holiday, but throughout the entire year, he said.
“Peace is the greatest thing to experience,” and it consists of knowing that God will change lives by people simply calling his name, Witherspoon said.
Throughout his life, Witherspoon had many plans and ideas, he told the club. He discovered, however, that God’s way was the right way for his life, he said.
“Are we under the control of the Holy Spirit, or are we under the control of ourselves?” he asked the audience.
He said the greatest decision he made in his life was coming to know God.
“It is good to have a thankful attitude,” Witherspoon said. “We are commanded to give thanks.”
In life, he said, many people don’t like to be told what to do. As he lived, Witherspoon discovered how “small” he was and how “great” God is, he said.
“You can’t buy salvation,” he said. “It’s a free gift from God.”
Witherspoon said God is saying to everyone, “ I love you,” and “Trust me.”
“God heard my cry and he delivered me,” he said.
Witherspoon said God has an invitation to everyone to “come to Him” regardless of who you are and where you’ve come from.
People also must learn to love one another, he said.
“You can’t love someone until you’ve forgiven that person,” he said.
“How can we ask for God’s forgiveness when we can’t forgive others?” he asked the crowd.
Witherspoon said to pray for one another as Jesus Christ taught.
