State Rep. Nikki Haley brought her campaign for the Republican nomination for governor to Hartsville Tuesday.
Haley, who represents District 87 in Lexington County, met and talked with voters at Centennial Park in downtown Hartsville before attending a fundraiser Tuesday night at the Hartsville Country Club.
Haley said she chose to get into the race for governor because she saw no candidates entering the race who would push for the kind of change she said South Carolina needs.
“I didn’t see anybody running in the state who would really bring the kind of change the people of South Carolina want,” she said.
She said her focus will be on bringing more jobs to the state and improving South Carolina’s education system.
“People are worried about getting South Carolina back to work,” Haley said. “I want to build a South Carolina that will be a competitive state. To do that, we have to take care of the businesses we already have. We have to take care of our small businesses. We need to take care of the ones we have now.”
Haley has served in the House since 2004.
She said South Carolina faces major challenges but also plenty of opportunities to take advantage of with the right kind of leadership.
“I know what good government looks like,” she said. “I’m running for governor so the people of South Carolina will know what it feels like.”
Earlier this week, Haley received the endorsement of first lady Jenny Sanford.
“I have every confidence that with conservative leadership and a renewed commitment to the principles that have made America great – hard work, traditional values, promoting an atmosphere of opportunity over an environment of bailouts – we can transform out state,” Haley said.
