Update: The Hess Family was notified by Parenting Magazine, earlier this week, that they have been selected as the winners of the road trip national contest.

A fun-loving and adventurous family of four is semi-finalist in a national competition and need your votes.

Marion residents and school teachers Jedd and Sheila Hess along with two-year old Alivia and three-year old Jedd Alan have been chosen as one of 10 families for the Parenting Magazine road trip national contest.

Viewers and the public are already casting votes for the winning family.

“Three words that describe our family are loving, adventurous and dedicated,” Sheila Hess said.

Team Hess is in the running for the 2010 road trip family because they love traveling and making memories together,” she said.

Jedd Hess is a teacher at Marion Intermediate School and coaches junior varsity and varsity football for Marion High School.

Sheila Hess is a teacher at Easterling Primary School. Son Jedd Alan enjoys football and can be found at a number of games supporting the Swamp Foxes, while sister Alivia enjoys dancing and playing with dolls.

As a family, the group hits the road often to the beach, sporting events or a cabin in the mountains.

“Our family is trailing by 1,253 votes. But, the good news is that the voting window will be open until Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. and there is time to catch up,” Sheila Hess said.

“We got interested in the contest while reading Parenting magazine over the summer. The winning family's road trip vacation was published and they were calling all road warriors for this contest. We love to travel and see the world as a family and thought we would enter,” Sheila Hess explained.

A day before the deadline to enter the family submitted a 100-word essay and picture. Then a week later received an email informing them they’ve been selected in the semifinals, making the top 55 out of 1500 entries.

“We had to submit another 100 word essay and picture, which was used for the voting website,” she said.

Individuals are allowed to vote daily and the Hess family has already received over 4,500 votes but trail the leading team by 1,000 votes.

The family with the most votes will win an all expense paid and planned vacation.
