The Hartsville Branch of the NAACP celebrated a milestone Saturday night with the 25th Annual Freedom Fund Celebration.
The Center Theater in downtown Hartsville was filled to near capacity for the event, which featured music by recording artist Archie Bell and a special 25-year salute performance by the Phillis Wheatley Repertory Theater of Greenville.
The theater group, made up of more than 25 middle school and high school students, performed selections from “Dream Girls” and “View from the Mountain Top,” portraying African American history from the time of slavery up through today with the election of President Barack Obama.
During the event, special presentations were made to Hartsville NAACP President Floyd Davis and Franklin Hines for their years of service to the organization and to the Hartsville community.
“The NAACP is for everybody,” Davis said.
Reginald Alford performed a special 25-year musical tribute.
Toylesha Thomas was named 2009 Hartsville Branch NAACP Woman of the Year.
Major sponsors for the event were Sonoco, Wal-Mart, Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center and Progress Energy.
This year’s Freedom Fund Committee was co-chaired by Lovis Thomas and Daisy Weaver. Committee members are Franklin Hines, Floyd Davis, Mildred Wyatt, Theodore B. Thomas, Nathan Phillips and Lawrence Manning.
Dr. Gary Barker and Carl Days served as masters of ceremony for the evening.
The event drew people from across South Carolina.
