HEMINGWAY— While its days of housing students might be over, the Old Muddy Creek School House is poised to reopen in a new capacity.
The recent procurement of a $40,000 grant by Sen. Yancey McGill, D-32, has led the way in the ongoing renovation project that aims to establish the historical building as a center for community events.
New windows and stoops have been added to the school, as well as repairs made to the roof, ceilings and floors. Upgrades have also been made to the building’s bathrooms, plumbing, doors, insulation, in addition to a new handicap ramp that was added during the renovation.
However, a letter sent out earlier this month by schoolhouse committee chairman Kenny Davis, said more work is needed.
“The major need now is heating and air conditioning,” Davis said in the letter. “The outside needs painting and even though the roof has been repaired, it still need to be replaced.”
The group is asking for donations from within the community to continue the renovation project. The letter said donations would be fully taxed deductable, checks made payable to the “Williamsburg County Treasury,” denoting on the check that funds are for the Old Muddy Creek School House.
The letter said funds collected will be placed in a separate account and returned to the project’s treasurer, Rhae Cribb, at:

The history of the Old Muddy Creek School House can be dated back to the early 1800’s, according to research done by the groups historical committee. W.A. Lawrimore purchased the land on which the current structure now sits, across Muddy Creek Road across from Ebenezer United Methodist Church, in 1936 for $100.00.
