MYRTLE BEACH - Challenger Mike Lowder defeated incumbent Chuck Martino Tuesday to win one of two seats on the Myrtle Beach City Council.
Both men finished behind Randal Wallace, who was re-elected in the run-off to his third term on council.
“I just want to thank all the folks that came out and voted today and I truly want to thank what appears to be an army of supporters that came out and worked for Mike Lowder,” said Lowder.
With 100% of the precincts reporting, Wallace finished with 3,330 votes, Lowder had 2,713 votes and Martino finished third with 2,412 votes.
“I was a little overwhelmed when I started to see these numbers come in that the public had stuck with us and so I’m deeply gratified and humbled that they did this to this extent,” said Wallace.
Lowder was the only challenger to knock off an incumbent in the election, which originally included a crowded field of candidates, many of whom ran in opposition to council recent crackdown on motorcycle rallies inside the city.
After the race, Martino hugged Lowder, to congratulate him.
“The amount of support that the candidates, all the candidates that ran, put behind Mike obviously it helped and Mike ran a good race and we did the best that we could,” said Martino.
