Martha Gasque leads her Whittemore Park Middle School students in practice every day in advance of this year's wintertime concert.
Gasque says some of her students, though, can barely afford to be in band, because instruments can be so expensive. She says more than 60% of her sixth grade students use school-owned instruments.
"We want everybody to be able to be in band," she said Wednesday morning. "Just because they don't have enough money at that moment doesn't mean they shouldn't have the chance to be in band."
That's why Star Music of Myrtle Beach's 2nd Annual "Holiday Harmony" Instrument Drive is so important. The goal is to gather donated instruments to directly benefit middle school band programs in Horry County.
Jason Barr with Star Music said last year, the program collected 11 instruments--good for one donated instrument to each middle school in the county.
This year's drive runs from Monday, November 23 until Friday, December 18. The drop-off locations include: Little River Chamber of Commerce, Chestnut Mandolins in downtown Conway, Sounds Better and Star Music in Myrtle Beach, and Surfside Beach Town Hall.
The drive wants to collect flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, and saxophones in just about any condition.
Star Music will also accept monetary donations.
