The Hemingway Tigers have had a heck of a season in 2009, coming together for a 9-1 record and two impressive playoff wins to put them in the lower state championship. That success has translated not only to wins but for three members of the Tiger squad, special recognition for their individual accomplishments.

Seniors Quintin Brown and Rashawn Smalls, along with head coach Ken Cribb, were selected to squad from the Southern part of South Carolina in the annual North-South All-Star game that pits seniors in the state against one another in December at Myrtle Beach.

Brown and Smalls were selected for their accomplishments on the playing field and Cribb for his coaching prowess throughout the season.

The Tiger head coach will serve as an assistant during the Dec. 12 matchup in at Dough Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach.

“We tell our kids that the more you win the more love everybody gets,” Cribb said in a recent interview with Brown and Smalls following the announcement of their selections. “When you’re successful you get rewards, you get honors and you get recognized. We’ve had these two named North South, we’ve had several players of the week in the local papers and the local news stations, we’ve had several plays of the week. Like I said, the more you win the more love you get.”

“I was surprised, I was very surprised,” Brown, who has lit up the field at wide receiver and defensive back this season, said. “I thought that when we first began the season that I didn’t play like I should, but I’m happy now that I have been selected.”

Smalls, a triple threat for the Tigers in 2009, playing running back, wide receiver and defensive end, shared Brown’s enthusiasm upon being selected, but said the thought all along has been that of team and not individual accolades.

“Once the season gets going…you have to get it out of your head because really it ‘s not about that,” he said. “That’s in December. This is now and we are trying to win the state championship. The best thing to do is focus on the game that is this week.”

“It’s an honor. It’s a lot of hard work,” Cribb said. “It’s very, very difficult to pick the 44 best players from the southern part of the state, but again it is an honor and I’m proud to represent our school and our community.”
