Over 50 members of the Volunteer Organization for Individuals with Catastrophic Events in collaboration with the Marion County Collaborative Action Network put together a special service to help two families dealing with mounting medical expenses and tragic events.
“A Voice for the people” program was held Nov. 7 at the A.C. Robinson Family Resource Center in Marion to help raise funds for two particular families.
The late Toliver Legette was born in January 2009 and diagnosed with short-bowel syndrome. Toliver’s parents Dwayne and Phoebe Leggette stood by his side during a seven-month round of hospital stays, intensive care units, surgeries, doctors, nurses, specialists and medical bills.
The family of Jermaine Gerald, 28, awaits a kidney transplant.
The goal is assisting families that have exhausted all avenues of assistance.
The volunteers considerate means of helping families resulted in $1,500 donated to both families.
The non-profit organizations put together the event that featured musical performances from Rev. Mack Page, Rev. Fredrick Johnson and the Weeks Sisters, along with comedy sketches from Helen Fullard and a group of ladies performing a “manless” wedding.
