»  Comments | Post a Comment

Thumbs up to Florence County School District 3, based in Lake City, for being one of 44 school districts receiving a portion of about $7.3 million in federal Enhancing Education Through Technology (E2T2)/ARRA Round 9 Competitive Grants. Florence 3 will receive $100,000 to provide a technology coach for J. Paul Truluck and Ronald E. McNair middle schools, as well as the district’s five elementary schools, for support, guidance and training of teachers. The purpose of the grants is to implement 21st century classrooms using innovative strategies that enhance instruction, facilitate teaching and learning, and improve student achievement. The awards recently were announced by the S.C. Department of Education’s Office of eLearning.

Thumbs up to media specialist Ged Duvall and Main Street Elementary School in Lake City for being among those recognized for promoting the use of educational technology in teaching and learning. The recognitions were announced at SC EdTech 2009, the annual conference that focuses on innovative uses of technology to enhance student achievement. Main Street Elementary School received an Innovative Programs Awards honorable mention for “Technofun Recess,” an enrichment program implemented last year by Duvall and assistant Susan Allen. They reviewed teacher lesson plans and selected interactive Web sites the students could play on the media center computers and SmartBoard during recess. Students were awarded cub cash for participation and high scores. The conference is a project of the S.C. Association for Educational Technology, represented by multiple partners including K-12 education, higher education, state government agencies and telecommunications business firms. The award honors schools or districts that have exhibited excellence or that exemplify best practices in the integration of technology in education.

Pete Mazzaroni, manager of public affairs for Roche Carolina Inc., would “like to offer a huge Thumbs up (to) Roger Malfati, Bob Ericksen, George Jebaily, Jennifer Wilcox, the rest of their team and the many volunteers who made this year’s S.C. Pecan Festival the best yet. As evidenced by its growth every year, this event truly showcases the great things that downtown Florence has to offer. Just ask the 40,000 people that come!!!”

Belle Zeigler, director of development for All Saints’ Episcopal Day School in Florence, offers this: “Thumbs Up to Bree Boyce, Miss Florence, for kicking off her ‘Eating Healthy, Fighting Obesity’ campaign at All Saints’ Episcopal Day School on Monday morning. Her promotion of the importance of making healthy nutritional choices and daily exercise made a very positive impact on the student body of 340 children, in grades 3K-6th. The school implemented a Nutrition and Wellness program last school year and always enjoys having speakers come in to talk with the students about healthy living. Miss Boyce should be commended for sharing her message. There is much to be learned from her life and her decision to get healthy!”
