OLANTA — Olanta Town Council members and residents heard the results of the town’s 2008 audit during their most recent meeting.
Samantha A. Salisbury, a Moncks Corner-based external auditor and certified public accountant who specializes in governmental issues, gave the results of the audit at the Nov. 10 meeting.
According her findings, it was recommended that the town develop a policy and procedures manual along with an organizational chart and standard forms that can be used when necessary.
After the meeting, Olanta Mayor Betty Sims said those recommendations are now in place.
During the meeting, Salisbury said Olanta town clerk Tara Basye and Monica Richardson from Newell Richardson & Co., a Certified Public Accountant firm in Johnsonville, have made “tremendous strides.”
Later during the meeting, Sims introduced Olanta Mayor-elect Jimmy McCutcheon and councilmen-elect Tommy “Mitch” Driggers Jr. and Eric L. Evans, who won in the Nov. 3 elections.
Sims said Rik Basye is the town’s new code enforcer, whose duties will include handling business licenses and monitoring work being done on houses. Sims said this is an appointed position.
Milton A. Smalls, partnership specialist from the Charlotte Regional Census Center of the U.S. Census Bureau, gave information on the 2010 Census. Smalls said the census is “safe, easy, and confidential.” He said the data individuals put on the Census is not shared with anyone.
Small said it is important that the Census receives accurate results and that this year’s census form has been shortened to 10 questions.
Olanta Police Chief Mark Strickland said his department is still investigating a robbery at Cliff’s Food Store and has some suspects, who will be “narrowed” down.
Deborah Turbeville said the Olanta Beautification Committee will sponsor a bake sale from 9 a.m. until on Nov. 21 at the F&L Drug Store on Jones Road. Turbeville said the money raised will help the committee buy Christmas decorations for the town.
