Socastee High School will host a holiday fundraiser to raise funds for the Haitian St. Sacrement School in Fond Parisien, Haiti. All funds raised will be used to sponsor teachers of the school. Currently, the teachers are working without salary, and through these fundraising efforts, Socastee High School, through a partnership with CHAP (Christian Haitian American Partnership), hopes to provide a yearly salary for as many teachers at the school as possible.
Students, parents, and community members are encouraged to donate any denomination of money to the fundraiser in honor of or in memory of a family member or loved one. With each donation, the contributor will receive a holiday ornament with the message: “A donation has been made in your honor by_________ to benefit the St. Sacrement school teachers in Fond Parisien, Haiti.”
“We are thrilled to host this fundraiser for the school teachers in Haiti, especially in conjunction with American Education Week. This fundraiser not only allows us to benefit this impoverished school but also to create global awareness among our students,” says Lynn Rigsbee, coordinator of the fundraising effort.
There are approximately 150 children enrolled in the school. Because there are no public schools in Haiti, private schools are the only opportunities for children to receive formal education. We have started what we hope to be an annual tradition in partnering with the school to provide funding for teachers’ salaries.
Haiti was at one point in time a popular tourist destination, but now is considered the poorest country in the western hemisphere. In Haiti 80% of the 8 million people live in poverty and 75% of the able working population is unemployed.
