Entertainment Technology instructor Morris Ward wants his program to prepare students for the “big stage.”
With over 21 students, Ward teaches skills in stage designs, productions, lighting and music productions.
A couple of weeks ago, students traveled to the Alabama Theatre in Myrtle Beach for training partnership. Every year the students take a ride to the theatre to watch the last summer show and then take down the set with the production crew. The 11-year instructor said the students work the entire night before returning home in the morning. The students then made a return trip to load up the Christmas set that will run through New Year’s Day.
Tavaris Humphries, a junior at Mullins High School and aspiring music producers enjoys the opportunity to develop his own music. Ward said the students also work with video equipment and host two talent shows during the course of the year.
“We did the whole sound and lighting production for the last concert at the Carolina Entertainment Complex and assist with performance during the Golden Leaf festival in Mullins. “We’re not only learning in the classrooms but taking what we’ve learn out into the community,” Ward said.
Ward teaches classes for first year and second year students during the day.
Students, Ticory McCullough, Donnie Collins, Trey Humphies and Tavaris Humphies all say they enjoy the program. When asked their favorite part of the program the response was quick. “The teacher.”
“I want to learn how to make music, that’s why I’m in the studio all the time, Tavaris said.
Trey Humphies said stage production is his niche, while Collins enjoys working with the sound system.
Ward and his student look forward to more activities in the future.
