Consumer Affairs teaching toy safety

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It's that time of year again, time for holiday shopping. For the past two years, recalls led the way for parents shopping trips. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs wants to help parents and teachers to keep kids safe. There are also new federal guidelines involving lead content and resale items which will help parents stay up-to-date with the recalls.

Parents aren't the only ones needing to stay updated. Teachers and daycares also need to be extra careful about toy selection. Kidzone Daycare in Myrtle Beach stays on top of toy recalls knowing the safety of the kids is at stake. "Alot of our toys come from catalogs or children's catalogs that are manufactured toys specifically for daycares and childcares,” said Julie Boggess, owner of Kidzone Daycare. “That makes me feel better, however, we still know the websites to check for recalls and stay in contact with that."

The new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act is new legislation regulating resale and thrift shops. This should give parents peace of mind when trying to save a few dollars this holiday season. Shoppers need to make sure they shop with reputable shops and ask about their policies. "We make sure we go through our toys and make sure everything is in good repair,” said Boggess. “A lot of the toys with the paint and the painted blocks and things we just try to stay away from completely."

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is holding a conference in Columbia for parents, childcare workers and teachers.
They will discuss new safety concerns and demonstrate how you can test products yourself for basic safety hazards.

The conference is December 8th from 8:30am to 1pm at the SC Fire Academy in Columbia.
