Some local firefighters are working hard to stay fit and safe on the job. A group from Horry County Fire Rescue will leave next week to compete in the world firefighter challenge in Las Vegas, NV. They'll compete against thousands of other firefighters.
Strength and stamina are what will get you through the world firefighter combat challenge. Seven countries and thousands of firefighters will compete for the world champion title. Team Black Fire from New Zealand is in Horry County to train with Team Horry, hoping to perfect their skills before the competition. "The challenge prepares you for anything,” said Rob Holah, New Zealand’s Team Manager. “We really have got a much better skill set. All of the things you do in the challenge are based on stereotypical things that have to complete on the job anyway, so this just prepares you better.”
The Horry county program is recognized throughout the country for a level of excellence. Horry County Fire-Rescue recently received an award from the American Heart Association. The Heart Association gave 80 platinum awards to various companies. Horry County was the only fire department in the country to receive a platinum award.
The wellness program is there to keep firefighters in tip top shape. "Obviously, if you're in healthier shape, you're going to be able to maintain that when you go on a call, you're not going to be a statistic," said Michael Medieros, HC Fire Rescue Wellness Coordinator. Medieros said 60 percent of all firefighter deaths each year are attributed to cardiovascular disease and stroke. He works to get and keep firefighters in shape.
The teams will compete in the five-man relay division and also in the individual competition while in full-gear. The competition is November 14-21.
