HEMINGWAY—The Hemingway Police Department is asking citizens to be on the lookout for two persons who have reportedly conned several thousand dollars from area residents in the past.
Chief H. Brian Todd said the department has received several calls regarding an African American male and female that have been soliciting residents for money in recent weeks. Accounts received by the police have indicated that the pair has asked for funds both in person and over the phone.
Todd said citizens have reported the woman claims she has a child that was badly burned in a recent car accident and money is needed for medical treatment. She has also been known to claim that she is expecting a settlement check and promises to pay back whatever money is given.
Other reports from within the community indicate that the pair has met with pastors of area churches, sharing a similar story and asking for help, the chief said.
The department said it has reason to believe the story is not true and that the man and woman are known drug users. These individuals have been contacted by local law enforcement and were warned that action will be taken should they continue to harass residents.
The woman is described as African American, approximately 5 feet 7 inches, 250 pounds, while the man, also described as African American, is between 5 feet 5 inches-5feet 6 inches and roughly 150 pounds.
Todd asks residents to contact the Hemingway Police Department immediately if approached by these individuals claiming a similar story.
“I need the activity reported as soon as possible,” Todd said. “To help stop an innocent person wanting to help from being a victim.”
The chief went on to say that the Town of Hemingway has an ordinance already in place prohibiting “drug users begging for money” within city limits and that ordinance will be strictly enforced.
