LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Reader responds to cyclists sharing road with motorists

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I’d like to respond to the article in Saturday’s paper, Oct. 31 titled, Pedal versus the metal about Pee Dee cyclists urging motorists to share the roads. All automobile drivers should be aware that the cyclists have a right to the road just as automobiles. However, I’d like to remind the cyclists that they are subject to the same rules and regulations as those of us driving automobiles. Just last week my husband was driving down Highway 340 approaching the Hoffmeyer Road intersection. As he approached the intersection, he had a green light. Out of the corner of his eye he saw something and slammed on brakes. A cyclist sped between two lines of stopped automobiles out into the intersection directly in front of his truck. Luckily, for both of them, my husband was driving slow enough that a tragic accident was avoided. When they both got stopped, the cyclist was close enough to the front of his truck to reach out and touch it. He just smiled and waved and rode on.

Be sure to remind the cyclists to follow the rules of the road just like automobile drivers.
