FLORENCE -- The Saturday ahead of Veterans' Day saw the retirement of many flags as Girl Scouts, community members and color guard members gathered at Florence National Cemetery for the ceremony.
With reverance, old flag after old flag were neatly unfolded and placed into the fire where they were saluted as they burned.
Following the portion of the ceremony where specific portions of the flags are burned as their ceremonial meaning was explained, people in attendance were invited to join in.
Several Scout and veteran organizations conduct flag retirement ceremonies throughout the year.
