The tragic events at Ford Hood Texas on Thursday have generated a tremendous amount of local reaction.

Some local Vietnam War veterans said they are saddened and disturbed by what happened.

Veterans like Carroll Prosser and Ralph Cassar said they can relate to the reactions the men and women at Fort Hood feel, especially those who have recently returned from war zones in Afghanistan and Iraq.

"It’s not fair,” said Cassar, “it's not fair to them, they served their time in the war zone they made it through they were very glad God sought them through it and now they had to come home and face all that."

Cassar said he still remembers coming back from the war to his home base of Fort Bragg, NC and how he said it was not the most pleasant memory.

"They were spitting on us and telling us that we were war mongers and that didn't make us feel very safe either you know."

Cassar added however that he could never imagine a shooting rampage like the one at Fort Hood could have happened back in his days in the military.

He said he is shocked that his fellow soldiers had to be disrespected the way they were on Thursday.

“The stress factor and fear factor that comes along with having just returned form the warzone wouldn’t help them because it’s like you’re back into a warzone again thinking that you are at peace,” said Cassar, “but it turns it out that’s it’s not that way you have to worry about somebody coming up behind you and starting shooting away at you, it’s just a sad situation.”

Prosser said he's mad and at a loss of words. He said he can't understand how and why the shooter would turn a gun on his own people.

"I feel a sense of rage,” said Prosser, “I just feel that the safety factor back then was a whole lot better than it is today people have no respect for not only themselves, but you need to respect these young men and women, these are good people."

Both men said that they take serving in the military to the heart and that's why on Friday they participated in raising money for the Disabled Veterans of America at Golden Corral on hwy 501.
