Students learn a legacy of South Carolina
The eighth grade social studies classes along with teachers Wallace Foxworth and Annette Dorman took part in a cultural study regarding the history and process of the sweet grass basket.
The coiled sweet grass basket is part of South Carolina heritage because the technology and skill to make these baskets was brought to the early colony by African slaves from their native homeland.
The original use of the basket was in early rice production. The baskets are only made today in South Carolina which makes it even more unique. Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 the students learned some of the history of the sweet grass basket from artisans,John and Earmine Smalls of Mt. Pleasant.
The Johnakin eighth graders made their own basket piece to take home continuing the legacy of South Carolina heritage.
