Harassment charge dropped for former chief deputy

A second-degree harassment charge against a former Marlboro County chief deputy sheriff has been dropped.

The charge was dismissed at a hearing for Charles English, of 2537 Laurin Willis Road, Clio, Wednesday afternoon before Marlboro County Magistrate Ronald K. McDonald in Bennettsville.

According to a summons, English was accused of repeatedly harassing a Clio woman by repeatedly coming to her workplace, a Clio convenience store, yelling at her and following her. She said she asked him to stop, but refused to do so, according to the summons, which was served Oct. 14.

English denied the allegations.

McDonald said the charge was dropped because the woman came to the hearing but decided not to testify or present a case. English came to court and had four witnesses ready to testify to the actual facts of the case, English’s attorney, Dan Blake, said via e-mail.

English served as chief deputy sheriff under former Marlboro County Sheriff William Simon.
