A 40-minute clip from the documentary, “Coal Country,” will be shown to the Pee Dee Group-Sierra Club on Thursday.
The program begins at 7 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 1201 Cherokee Road, Florence.
The film shows the impact of mountaintop removal coal mining on the forests, streams and communities of Appalachia and on the lives of residents directly threatened by mountaintop removal. Even though South Carolina doesn’t produce any coal, 86 percent of its energy comes from coal, and local power plants use coal from the Appalachian Mountains. According to the S.C. Energy Office, South Carolina is the fourth least energy efficient state in the nation.
