ScienceSouth is offering rising fourth- to eighth-grade students the opportunity to fill his or her summer with hands-on science experiments.
Beginning June 15, ScienceSouth will offer a weekly summer science camp at the ScienceSouth Pavilion at Freedom Florence, 1511 Freedom Blvd., Florence.
Sheryl Love, director of marketing and development for ScienceSouth, said the summer camps will “illuminate an excitement of science in a child if it wasn’t there to begin with.
“If they are interested in science, depending on which area, it helps them learn additional skills that they wouldn’t get in the classroom or anywhere else,” Love said. “They really have a great time.
“They get so engaged (in the lessons),” she said. “It really gives children with all different kinds of learning levels the same playing field.”
Love said the hands-on experience will engage children of all interest levels and age groups.
Not only will those who attend the camps have a fun activity to do during the summer, children also learn valuable information that can be used during a regular classroom setting.
“I lot of it will carry over to the science they learn in fall because the material is standards-based,” Love said. “We incorporate a lot of the state standards into our instruction.”
Each camp will have a different theme and will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost for one week of camp is $175 per child.
The cost includes all camp materials and a snack. Campers must bring their own lunch.
This year, ScienceSouth is offering the following camps:
- Crazy Chemistry, June 15-19. Campers will make their own goo, learn some kitchen chemistry and make things glow while learning about luminescence.
- Space and Beyond, June 22-26. Campers will build nano rovers, create comets and take a glance at the stars in the planetarium.
- Critters and Crawlers, July 6-10. Campers will get a lesson on critters and crawlers including dissecting a frog and making an insect collection.
- Extreme Engineering, July 13-17. Campers will design rockets, boats and catapults, and learn about engineering.
- Forensic Frenzy, July 20-24. Campers will learn about blood types, fingerprints and solving a crime.
