With hurricane season about to start, a portable TV is a good thing to have. June 12th, digital television will replace analog television. If you own a portable analog set, you'll need to make sure it will still work after the transition.
Communication is key in the event a tropical storm or hurricane moves through. If the power goes out, a battery-powered set is a great way to continue watching local weather reports.
Digital portable sets are now widely available. For years, portable televisions kept us updated through natural disasters. If power is lost or cable service is out, you lose your connection to ongoing weather reports.
"That changeover will basically say you’re going to see static,” said Chris Tyndall, Electronics Representative at Best Buy. “You're not going to want to see that happen when there's a hurricane coming or if there's a really bad thunderstorm or tropical storm on the way."
Manufacturers now offer digital portable televisions ranging in price from around $130 to $170, depending on the level of quality and options. They make flat screens and wide screens and because they're digital, you can watch high definition programming.
You don't necessarily need to purchase a digital one, you can buy a battery-powered converter box and use your analog set.
"The problem you may run into with an older battery operated TV is that trying to plug a converter into it, that battery operated TV may not actually have the hook-ups and video inputs for it.” said Tyndall. “If it did, you may not still have the adaptors for it from when you first bought the TV."
If you're not sure, take your analog set to an electronics store to see if they can make it work. If you need to purchase a new one, make sure you recycle your old set.
