MURRELLS INLET - The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a woman died after she was struck and killed by a car in Murrells Inlet Wednesday night.

It happened around 9:30 on Highway 17 Business, near Creek Ratz restaurant along the Marsh Walk.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson identified the pedestrian killed as Leigh Ann Wheeler, 52, of Pawleys Island. Wheeler is the ex-wife of Myrtle Beach Pelicans Manager Ralph "Rocket" Wheeler.

Johnson said she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Johnson said Wheeler was also was a longtime employee at a Georgetown County hospital where she was the Director of E.R. Nurses.

A spokesman for the Pelicans says Wheeler will be away from the team through the weekend.

The Pelicans will hold a moment of silence in honor of Leigh Ann Wheeler before tonight's game against the Winston-Salem Dash. Flags at BB&T Coastal Field will also be lowered to half-staff.

The SC Highway Patrol M.A.I.T. team will be back at the scene to further investigate the crash Thursday morning.
