TIMMONSVILLE — Florence School District 4 Board of Trustees members received an update on the district’s finance department’s latest efforts to balance the 2009-10 general operating budget during a called meeting/work session Tuesday.
Mamie Tedder, the district’s director of finance, discussed areas of the coming fiscal year’s budget that had to be reduced in order for the district to balance the budget totaling $6,056,104.
The district’s revenue totals $5,618,299.
The proposed general fund budget includes a base student cost of $2,034 and a 135-day average daily membership of only 886.38 students, which has decreased from the 2008-09 budget.
Tedder said she was able to reduce several expenditures in the budget to cut the district’s deficit down to $437,805 from about $600,000.
Tedder said several line items — including salaries for substitute teachers on the primary level — were moved to other accounts, which helped alleviate some of the deficit in the general fund.
The district, as well as other districts in the state, still are waiting on the outcome of the state’s budget to determine a solid student base cost figure.
The fate of the federal stimulus funds also is up in the air as districts continue to prepare for the coming school year.
So far, the district has had to absorb $855,582 in state budget cuts and has seen a reduction totaling $653,445 in Education Finance Act funds.
In an effort to balance the budget, the district eliminated 22 positions, which included positions at both the district office and school levels.
The district also has reduced the number of days employees work.
In other business, the board briefly discussed the use of Title I stimulus money to fund the district’s Star Academy.
The board also received an update from the athletic department and recognized several students and staff members for local, state and national achievements.
