STUCKEY – The fifth annual Walk-a-Thon was held at the Community Outreach Service Shalom (COSS) in Stuckey on Saturday morning, May 16. An estimated seventy-five to eighty persons participated in the events of the morning. Participants walked 3 ½ miles from COSS on Airport Road to 261, then down Mt. Carmel Rd to Old Mt. Carmel Church and back to the COSS Center. The events of the morning included Bingo, health screening, hot dogs, a fish fry and much more.

Four trophies were presented for the event. First place went to Brian Cooper, Second to Leroy Scott, Third to Rudy Rogers, and Fourth Place went to James Williams. All ages participated. Monica Scott, now age eleven, has participated in the Walk-a-Thon every year since the program began.

The chair person who was in charge of this year’s Walk-a-Thon was Gloria Burroughs. Others who actively helped in the planning were Rick Garder, Hallie Palmer, Barbara Hillman, Joan McFadden, Audrey Miller, Rev. Geneva Stafford, and the COSS Board Members.

The Walk-a-Thon is a climax of the year’s program of walking for health. The COSS Park and track are always open for individuals to walk any day. Other programs offered at the COSS Center include a Prayer Line Ministry, KOINONIA, tutoring after school three days a week and Saturdays, Shalom trips, and sports including softball, baseball and Little League.

COSS is a non-profit 501c3 organization chartered by the South Carolina Secretary of State. It has been in operation for sixteen years. COSS is funded by the United Methodist Church, Williamsburg County, and the State of South Carolina. Edd Cunningham is actively seeking ways to increase community support to enable more programs and activities to benefit the community at the COSS Center.
