Forestry Commission: Horry County wildfire out

»  Comments | Post a Comment

CONWAY - Due to recent weather and the success of the containment measures which have been in place since late April, the South Carolina Forestry Commission has declared the entire Highway 31 Fire site in Horry County to be controlled.

According to Forestry Commission spokesman Scott Hawkins, until now this fire was considered contained, meaning there was the potential for hot spots, flare-ups and re-burns within the 36-mile perimeter.

"SCFC fire managers have determined there is no substantial heat being generated within the containment area. In short, the fire is officially 'out'," Hawkins said in a news release.

The fire scorched nearly 20,000 acres in Horry County near North Myrtle Beach. It destroyed 76 homes and damaged dozens more.
