The Florence Area Literacy Council will hold its annual Used Book Sale to help fund some of the organization’s adult literacy programs.
The book sale is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13 at St. John’s Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall
Early bird entrance is at 7 a.m. There is a $5 per person admission fee until 8 a.m.
Christina Lawson, executive director of the Florence Area Literacy Council, said the book sale is a great way to get involved and promote literacy.
“Books and the Literacy Council go hand and hand,” Lawson said. “We just want to encourage people to come out and support the literacy council.
“Fundraisers count more than anything now because a lot of nonprofits are trying to make up for state, local and federal budget cuts,” she said.
Hundreds of books will be available for purchase ranging from $1 to $5. Cash and checks will be accepted but no credit cards.
Lawson said the proceeds from the sale will be used to benefit such adult literacy programs as its basic reading instruction, GED Preparation, Armed Services testing preparation and English as a Second Language instruction.
The literacy council is seeking book donations to help make the book sale a success.
Hardback, paperback and audio book donations are acceptable and can be dropped off at 240 S. Dargan St., Florence between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
All donations should be made before the book sale.
Donations should not be taken to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
The following books are not accepted:
— Magazines
— Law books or textbooks
— Reader’s Digest Condensed books
— Removed library books
— Damaged books (mildew, water, fire or ripped)
— Encyclopedias
The Florence Area Literacy Council has assisted thousands of adult learners with improving their reading skills since the organization was founded more than 30 years ago.
