A student at Pee Dee Academy, Flanagan was the Marion County winner and competed against entrants statewide. Sponsored by Blue Savannah – Swamp Fox Chapter, she was honored by the State Society at an Awards Luncheon during Spring Conference on April 4 in Columbia.
With congratulatory remarks from State Regent, Mrs. William L. Glasgow, and State American History Chairman, Dr. Faye M. Hart, Flanagan was presented a state winner certificate, a DAR medal, a trophy from the National Italian American Foundation, and a monetary award from the State Society. She was accompanied for the occasion by her parents, her brother Cody and her grandmother Lucille Suggs.
The Blue Savannah – Swamp Fox Chapter NSDAR annually sponsors American History Essay Contests in local schools. Students in grades five through eight are eligible to enter the American History essay contest; those in grades nine through 12 are eligible to enter the Christopher Columbus essay contest, which is co-sponsored by the National Italian American Foundation.
The topic for the contest this year was “Discuss five perils faced by Christopher Columbus’ expedition(s) and how Columbus and his crew overcame them.” In her essay, Flanaghan proposed and discussed the perils of weather, disease, mutiny, distance of the voyages and funding for expeditions. On the state level, essays are judged by a panel of college professors on the basis of historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness.
Flanaghan’s essay has been entered in the NSDAR Southeastern Division competition. This year the Chapter had entrants in the American History essay contest and in the DAR Good Citizens scholarship essay contest from two school districts and from Pee Dee Academy.
All of the local winners were from Pee Dee Academy. In addition to Flanaghan, winners were Mary B. Klauber, eighth grade American History Essay Contest; and Jordan White, DAR Good Citizens Scholarship Essay Contest.
