Woman, 12-year-old girl, family pet recover from pit bull attack

BENNETTSVILLEMarlboro County authorities are investigating a pit bull attack that sent two people to the hospital and injured their family dog.

It happened Wednesday night outside a residence just southwest of Bennettsville city limits.

Angela Sweatt and her 12-year-old niece, Breanna McCutcheon, were hurt but are recovering at home.

“He could have killed all of us,” Sweatt said.

The situation began with an open gate. Sweatt said the family dog, Biscuit, wandered off down the street to a neighbor’s and that’s when the pit bull attack began.

“I seen her pick up our little dog. I seen the pit bull up on its hind legs come down on my niece,” she said.

Sweatt is dressed in bandages, Breanna has stitches and Biscuit is too scared to come out of his dog house.

“The only thing she wanted to do was save her little dog’s life,” Sweatt said of her niece.

“When that dog jumped on me, it’s like I blacked out and the more I moved he had locked on my arm,” Breanna said.

“I’m just terrified to even think about that road,” she said.

Sweatt said she drove down the street and pulled the pit bull off her niece and their Jack Russell terrier. Then the pit bull turned on her.

“He was going for my face, my throat, my face and my side,” Sweatt said.

“He snatched Biscuit out of her arms and just started shaking him like a rag doll,” Breanna said.

Biscuit is receiving veterinary treatment, but so far he is doing OK.

As this family continues to recover, the victims said they’re thankful to have each other.

“Yeah we’ll probably have scarring the rest of our life, but we still have our lives,” Sweatt said.

Sweatt and her niece said they hope justice will be served and the owners will be held responsible.

“If not, some kid is going to die,” Sweatt said.

The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office told News13 that no one has been charged in connection with the attack. The pit bull, however, is being quarantined and evaluated.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control also has been notified about the attack.
