Homeowners everywhere are opting to keep their homes in this buyer’s market. Instead of selling them, they’re repairing and updating their homes.
One of the cheapest and quickest ways to update your home is a new coat of paint. You just need to make sure you get what you pay for.
George and Ruth VanWyk decided their home needed sprucing up and hired a local painter based on a referral. They're happy with the results of painter Larry Gibson's work. But that's not always the case.
If you hire a painter with little experience it could cost you more in the long run. "The majority are repainting, just hanging on because selling is not a good idea either, from what I understand. So, everybody is just trying to maintain and get a good quality job at an affordable price."
If you're planning on painting:
-You want to prep the surface areas. Scrape and sand areas with cracking paint. The paint will last longer.
-Trim bushes and trees away from areas to paint. Use drop cloths.
-Make sure you choose the right quality paint. Don't skimp on cheaper or self-priming paint, tests revealed they don't last as long.
You can expect a good paint job to last 5-10 years, depending on the weather variables.
Before you hire a painter:
-Ask about their experience and training, get references and then go check them out.
-Make sure they carry insurance.
-Ask them how they will prepare the area, including scraping, sanding and priming.
-Get in writing how much they will charge and exactly what they are expected to do.
