The man Horry County authorities arrested in connection to the shooting death of his estranged wife’s boyfriend Tuesday was formally charged Wednesday morning.
Jeffrey Todd Horan, 24, faces murder and first degree burglary charges in the killing.
A county magistrate read the charges to Horan at the hearing Wednesday and gave the suspect forms needed to apply for a public defender.
Horan’s mother and brother attended the hearing.
Horan will have a preliminary hearing within the next 10 days where a magistrate will look at the evidence to determine whether a crime has been committed and if there is enough evidence to move forward and try Horan.
Horry County Police responded to the Bahama Bay Villas around 8 a.m. Tuesday after county dispatchers fielded calls about a shooting.
When authorities arrived, they found 30-year-old James Alane dead in the back room of an apartment at the complex with multiple gunshot wounds.
Horan’s estranged wife, Tashana Horan, told investigators that she heard a knock at the door Tuesday, and then went to answer it.
Tashana told investigators that Horan made his way into the apartment, armed with a 9 millimeter handgun stuffed into the waistline of his pants, then chased Alane into a room and fired several shots at the victim, according to arrest warrants.
Horan then ran out of the apartment.
Horry County Police called out its Bloodhound Unit to search the area for Horan before tracking him down several hundred yards away from the scene to a patch of woods along Forestbrook Road.
Police arrested Horan without incident, then performed gun shot residue tests on the suspect’s hands and took oral DNA swabs before booking Horan into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
A circuit court judge will set bond on Horan within the next few weeks.
Horan’s first scheduled court appearance is set for July 10 at 1 p.m. in Conway.
