Two National Day of Prayer services are scheduled for today in Florence: at noon at the Florence City-County Complex, 180 N. Irby St., and at 7 p.m. at Poynor Adult/Community Education Center, 301 S. Dargan St.
A service also will be at noon at Trinity United Methodist Church, 26 Pearl St., Darlington. It is sponsored by the Darlington Ministerial Association.
The theme for the 58th observance of the event is “Prayer ... America’s Hope,” based on Psalm 33:22.
Meanwhile, the National Day of Prayer Task Force has launched Freedom Challenge to rekindle patriotism and passion for Christian heritage.
The Freedom campaign addresses the growing problem of spiritually-active teenagers disengaging from participation in the Christian faith during their young adult years.
According to the Barna research group, six of 10 20-somethings involved in a church as teenagers have failed to translate that into active spirituality during their early adulthood.
The National Day of Prayer Task Force thinks this is a growing concern because many teens have been raised in a culture unaware or unappreciative of the sacrifices made by men and woman of faith throughout U.S. history, enabling Christian Americans to enjoy the many freedoms we have today.
“When there are hardships and sacrifice for something you believe, you live a life that is unwavering in those convictions,” John Bornschein, senior director of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, said in a press release. “The current state of popular culture in America demonstrates the need for an initiative that challenges young people to lead disciplined lives built on a foundation of prayer.”
