It’s that time of year again where adults can dress up as their favorite book characters.
No, it’s not some Halloween party. It’s the Florence Area Literacy Council’s “A Novel Event.”
A Novel Event is a benefit to raise funds to fight adult illiteracy in Florence County.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. March 28 at Florence Country Club, 450 Country Club Blvd., Florence.
The event is a night of fun, food and drinks, and gives those who attend a chance to dress up like their favorite character from a book or novel.
“A Novel Event is one of the most unique fundraisers in Florence,” Christina Lawson, executive director of the Florence Area Literacy Council, said. “The whole idea of it is to just have fun.
“There are no formalities,” Lawson said. “It’s really a lot of fun and it’s a chance for people to show how creative they can be.”
A company or organization, as well as individuals, can sponsor a table at the event that would be decorated according to the theme of the novel or book chosen by the participants.
Sponsorship tables are available for donations ranging from $200 to $1,600.
Each participant will come dressed as a character from the book or novel, and enjoy a night of music, dinner, an open bar and auction.
This year, a specialty bar provided by Micky Finn’s will be held during a cocktail hour from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will include a sampling of martinis and a few “literary” drinks, including “The Fitzgerald,” a Hendrix gin and tonic garnished with cucumber slices or “Gone With The Wind,” a Carolina Sweet Tea vodka with a splash of lemonade and garnished with a lemon wedge.
Those who want to attend the event but don’t want to decorate a table can purchase individual tickets. Lawson said those participants would be notified of the theme and could dress accordingly.
Prizes are given for the best dressed and best decorated table.
The Florence Area Literacy Council has assisted thousands of adult learners with improving their reading skills since the organization was founded more than 30 years ago.
The council also provides GED preparation and Armed Services testing preparation services.
