Coastal Carolina University Student Hayley Lynch has been able to help others by rallying around a cause and rallying the support of her friends, fellow students, and even people she has never met.
Lynch has been working with The American Heart Association. She got involved after losing her father to a heart attack three years ago.
In memory of her father, Lynch became a team leader for last year’s “Heart Walk,” and got to work raising funds for the organization.
“The internet is a big part of anyone’s life these days, so I decided to jump right in on the internet,” Lynch said.
A lot of people use the internet and email for fundraising, but something Lynch added to her email wound up having a big impact on the organization’s fund raising efforts.
“The line I added at the end of my email was: if you can’t help, at least forward it to your friends, family, neighbors… because if you can’t help, maybe someone else could help.” Lynch said.
And, many people did pass along the email, which helped spread the message, and Heart Association officials say that dramatically helped the fundraising effort.
Ryan Hannan, spokesman for the Waccamaw area branch of the American Heart Association said that last line in Lynch’s email has changed the way the organization words its fundraising emails.
“We took that back and learned from that. And, from the Mid-Atlantic affiliate, we started implementing that in all our emails. So, thank you Hayley,” Hannan said.
Lynch plans to continue her work with The American Heart Association. She has signed up to be a team leader again this year, and she has some new ideas to get more of the community involved.
Right now, The Waccamaw area branch of The American Heart Association is gearing up for the annual “Heart Walk” in October, and “National Start Walking Day” on April 8th.
