Annie Bell Thomas
Marion – Annie Bell Abram Thomas, 72, was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Abram. She attended the public schools of Marion County and was the wife of Albert Thomas Jr.
They were the parents of Regina Avant, Alene Currie, Willie Lee Thomas, Glendale Fore and Robert Lee Thomas, all of Marion, and Michael and Albert Thomas, both of Jacksonville, N.C.
She was converted at an early age and joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, with Pastor Henry McGill Jr. officiating. Burial was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery.
Andrena Lester
Marion – Andrena Lester, 61, died on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 in the McLeod Hospice House at Florence.
She was born in Pee Dee to the late Annie Mae and Eddie Lester and was the sister of Marie Williams of Marion, Shirley Ross and Reatha Howard, both of Oxon Hill, Md., and the late James Eaddy Lester.
She moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1969 and recently worked with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. She returned to Marion in 2008 and began attending the Door of Hope Christian Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Friday, March 5, 2009, with Bishop Michael Blue officiating.
Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery. She is survived by her children Chandra Williams of Columbia, and Julious Lester of Oxon Hill, Md.
Beulah Bradley
Marion – Beulah Mae Taylor Bradley was the daughter of the late Dock Travis and Edith Richardson Taylor. She attended the public schools of Marion County and graduated from Marion County Training School.
She earned a B.S. degree in Vocational Home Economics from Allen University at Columbia in May 1947 and was a member of the Allen Booster Club. At Allen, she met Samuel Augustus Bradley and they were married Christmas Eve, 1947.
They were the parents of Deloris B. Harris of Durham, N.C., and Cathy B. Page of Marion. She worked as an educator for 37 years.
At an early age, she attended Bethel AME Church in Britton’s Neck and later joined St. John AME Church at Marion, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, March 7, 2009, with the Rev. Harry Wilson, eulogist.
Interment was at New Zion AME Church Cemetery at Wisacky. She worked untiringly with the J.T.W. Mims Little Allen All Stars and at St. John was on the Stewardess Board, Pastor’s Benevolent Club and the Senior Choir.
She is survived by her brother Seabrook Taylor of Sumter, Merlene Montgomery of Lake City, and Lucille Taylor of Britton’s Neck.
Bernice Williams
Rains – Bernice Davis Williams was born Jan. 17, 1917 to the late Steven and Viola Davis and was the sister of Almena Gause of Centenary.
She accepted Christ at an early age and joined the New Life Pentecostal Household of Faith, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Thursday, March 5, 2009, with Pastor Tina P. Williams, eulogist.
Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery. She was the Mother of the church and a missionary.
Survivors include her children Evangelist Mary Hannah and Thomas Williams both of the home; Margaret and Roosevelt Williams both of Rains; Wilhelmena Pierce of Penderboro; and Walter Lee McCullough of Hackensack, N.J.
Esther Lee Davis
Jacksonville, Fla. – Esther Lee Davis, 78, died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 in Jacksonville. She was the daughter of the late James and Georgianna Johnson.
She was converted at an early age and joined the Centerville Baptist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, with Pastor W. Norman Pee officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.
She was the wife of James Davis of Jacksonville, and the mother of the late Doris Ann Heath.
She was a lifetime member of Daysprings Baptist Church. A funeral was also held in Jacksonville.
Jah’niah McGilvary
Marion – Little Miss Jah’niah Alyssa McGilvary, 7 months, died on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 in the McLeod Regional Medical Center at Florence.
She was the daughter of Julixa and Johnny McGilvary of Marion.
A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Henry McGill Jr., officiating. She is survived by her brother Juh’ziah Elijah McGilvary.
James Owens
Marion – James Samuel Owens, 57, died on Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2009 in the Marion County Medical Center.
His parents were the late Harvey and Viola Donnelly Owens. He was the brother of Barbara Dawkins of Allentown, Penn., Deacon Harvey Owens of Marion and the late Delaney Owens.
In 1970, he graduated from Johnakin High School. He was formerly employed at Raytex Industries and Heritage Sportswear.
He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Monday, 2 March 2009, with Pastor Shawn V. Bell, eulogist. Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Agnes, and children Crystal Ann Owens, James Samuel Owens, James Kelvin Owens and Deon Smith.
Jasmine Samuels
Marion – Little Miss Jasmine Legette Samuels, 10, died on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 in the Marion County Medical Center.
She was the daughter of Ruby Monique Samuels and she attended the public schools of Mullins. She is survived by her grandparents Lisa Samuels of Marion and John Calvin Crawford of Suitland, Md.
A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church at Pee Dee, with Pastor Shawn V. Bell, officiating. Burial was at Holly Hill Cemetery.
Juanita Braziel Pridgen
Mullins – Juanita Braziel Pridgen, 84, died Friday, March 13, 2009 in Marion County Medical Center.
Mrs. Pridgen was born in Chester County, a daughter of the late James Ira and Myrtle Estelle Kirby McGill. She was a member of the Mullins First Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She was predeceased by her husband, James Wesley Braziel, her second husband, Raymond Pridgen and a brother, James Furman McGill.
She is survived by one son, Larry Braziel and his wife, Alice, of Myrtle Beach, one stepson, Dan Pridgen and his wife, Susan, of Mullins; four sisters, Virginia Cook of Rock Hill, Mattie Hamrick of Greensville, Katherine (Gene) Pate of Atlanta and Mary (Robert) Brewer of Rock Hill; four grandchildren, Lara Braziel, Helen (Chris) Athey, James (Sharon) Braziel and Detrich (Jodi) Braziel; one step-granddaughter, Leslie Pridgen; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was on Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in the chapel of Meares Funeral Home of Mullins. Interment followed at 3 p.m. at Royal Pines Cemetery in Winnsboro. Markeith Ford, Jr.
Marion – Master Markeith Jarrell Ford Jr., four days old, died on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 in the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston.
He was the son of Tangela Spry and Markeith Ford Sr.
Graveside services were directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at Smith Cemetery in Smithboro, the Rev. Robert Hunter officiated.
Marvin Smith
Marion – Marvin Kenneth Smith, 67, died on Feb. 14, 2009 in a Florence hospital. His parents were the late Marvin and LuPearl Crawford Smith.
He was the father of Dwayne Smith of Bennettsville, Tameka Crawford of Charleston, Mitchell and the late Marvin Kenneth Smith Jr. He attended Terrell's Bay High School at Centenary and joined Bethlehem AME Church of Rains at an early age.
He lived for many years in New York and returned to Marion, where he joined the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church at Penderboro. A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill at Pleasant Grove on Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, with Pastor A.C. Robinson officiating. Burial was at St. James AME Church Cemetery.
He is survived by Page Smith; sisters, Mae Verne Williams of Temple Hill, Md., and Loretta Stanley of Marion; and brother, Marvin Lee Smith of Temple Hill, Md.
Randolph Crawford
Florence – Randolph Crawford, 73, died on March 1, 2009 in the Carolinas Hospital System at Florence. He was the son of the late Clarence and Gertude Crawford.
He was the husband of Eliza Bethea Crawford, and the father of the late Donnie Freeman. He was converted at an early age and joined the New Hope Holiness Church of Rains, serving as a deacon until his health declined.
Later, he attended Judea Apostolic Church at Florence. He lived for many years in New York, where he attended Broty Temple Church and was a mason with the Crown of Life Lodge #343.
A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Marion, with Bishop Donald Hyman, officiating. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Gardens at Florence. He is survived by two sisters and one brother.
Henry E. Knight
Florence – Henry Eugene Knight, 44, husband of Sarah “Angie” Caulder Knight, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009 in his home after an illness.
He was born April 14, 1964 in Atlanta, a son of Ruby Hooks Knight and the late John H. Knight. Mr. Knight was a heavy duty equipment mechanic, having worked for the City of Mullins for 17 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving him, in addition to his wife, are his mother of Whiteville, N.C.; a son, Dawson B. Knight of Florence; two stepdaughters, Crystal Flowers and her husband Ronnie of Florence and Renee Waters of New Hampshire; three step-grandchildren; a brother, Jimmy Knight of Charleston; a sister, Betty Stanley and her husband Johnny of Clarendon, N.C.; a niece and several nephews of Clarendon, N.C.; and three nephews of Hardeeville.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 21 in the Chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins, with the Rev. Nelson Alexander officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.
William Alford
Marion - William Billy Alford, 52, died Thursday, March 19, 2009 in his home after an illness.
He was born Nov. 25, 1956 in Sumter, a son of Faye Stewart Alford and the late William Alford. Mr. Alford was a lifelong resident of Knife Island in Marion County, where he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved everything pertaining to the outdoors.He was also an avid NASCAR fan and graduate of Marion High School.
Surviving him are his mother, Faye Stewart Alford of Surfside Beach; his fiance, Cyndi Thomas of Galivants Ferry; two brothers, Jerry Alford and his wife Sharon of Orlando, Fla., and Chip Alford and his wife Lynne of Surfside Beach; a sister, Kay Brown of Myrtle Beach; four nephews; two grand-nephews; three grand-nieces; a special friend in Steve Rimer of Mullins; and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside memorial services will be at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 22 in Smith Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins. The family requests that those attending the services wear casual attire to honor Billy's request. Visitation will be Saturday from 6-8 p.m in Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.
