COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina legislators have advanced a bill putting a two-year hold on any new or replacement landfills for household garbage.
The Senate Medical Affairs Committee approved the statewide moratorium Thursday, sending it to the Senate floor.
Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler of Gaffney said the money that so-called mega dumps could put in local governments' coffers isn't worth the downsides. His district is home to one of three proposed mega landfills that sparked the bill.
Conservationists, residents and lawmakers say they don't want other states' trash.
Senators said the break is needed as the Department of Health and Environmental Control works on new regulations that would greatly reduce how much trash landfills in South Carolina could take.
