The downward spiral of our economy is topping headlines this year.
It's affecting families in yet another way that may surprise you, unfortunately involving your family pet.
Over in Florence folks at the humane society said they've seen a huge increase in pet surrenders.
"People are coming in and they're devastated, they hate to turn their animals in," Katy Hollingsworth, Florence Animal Shelter Manager, said.
Hollingsworth said they first noticed this about a month ago when the economy hit rock bottom.
They've had many owners tell them they can no longer afford their pet.
"It's hard to see people have to surrender the animals, and hard to see an animal that went from a comfy bed at home to being stuck in a cage. It can be devastating; those are some of the hardest for me when I look at them (pets) and they're looking at me saying why am I here? I was just in a house," Hollingsworth said.
Hollingsworth said because they're seeing more animals surrendered, they're extremely low on supplies and donations are also down.
"We need more food, more vaccines, we need everything more," Hollingsworth said.
You can also help make a difference--the humane society in Florence always accepts donations, or you can also help by volunteering.
Shelter representatives said they are always looking for dog walkers.
They also work with rescue groups to help find the animals a home.
