A Hartsville native and former Red Fox made national headlines last week as he became the highest paid defensive player in the history of the NFL.
This week, he was back in Hartsville.
On Saturday, Albert Haynes-worth, the defensive lineman who recently signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washing-ton Redskins, held an autograph session at the Coach T.B. Thomas Sports Center at Byerly Park.
Many area residents lined up with their sports memorabilia to meet Haynesworth and get an autograph.
Haynesworth, nephew to long-time recreation department employee Maceo Haynesworth, said the new sports center was impressive. “It’s really, really nice,” he said. “I was shocked. On the way here, I was headed to the old recreation department.”
The lineman said he always enjoys his trips back to Hartsville. “It’s always good. I get to see family and stuff like that. That’s what I come back for, just to hang out and do it like we used to do back the old days.”
Haynesworth said coming back to the recreation department, where his career started, was a needed experience. “It’s always good to remember where you came from and remember your roots,” he said. “It will always keep you grounded, that you never fly too high. Remember where you came from.”
