A new scheduling of courses for both Johnson Middle School and Timmonsville High School for the 2009-10 school year was approved by members of Florence School District 4 board of trustees at a regular meeting Tuesday.
Superintendent Dr. Bertha McCants presented drafts of proposed scheduling changes for both middle and high school students.
The scheduling changes from block schedules to year-long courses.
Block scheduling is a type of academic scheduling that calls for fewer classes per day for a longer period of time.
That means students attended four classes for 90 minutes.
With the new scheduling, students will attend seven 50-minute courses per day.
Courses held at Florence 4’s Career and Technology Center will continue to be on block scheduling.
That way, school buses will not have to transport students every class period.
The scheduling changes at both the middle and high school levels were made in an effort to help maximize teacher’s time.
Later in the meeting, McCants clarified a previous statement about the 2009-10 school calendar.
McCants said the 10 additional professional development days are included in the 190 days teachers are required to work during the school year.
Timmonsville High School principal Dr. Dorothy McClam presented the results of a school uniform survey given to high school students, parents and faculty.
McClam said 199 students, 40 parents and 30 faculty members completed the survey.
According to the results, most students surveyed said they wouldn’t support school uniforms, while both parents and faculty members who were surveyed said they would support school uniforms.
The board received the information for review.
The board also approved three out-of-state field trips.
