NMB High School advances to state Mock Trial competition

North Myrtle Beach High School’s Mock Trial team is heading to the state competition.

According to a press release from Horry County School District, the high school won the South Carolina Bar Regional High School Mock Trial Competition Saturday, February 28, at the Horry County Courthouse.

The team defeated teams from the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics, Johnsonville High School, Myrtle Beach High School, Saint James High School, Socastee High School, and Wilson High School.

The Mock Trial team advances to the state competition March 13 -14 at the Matthew J. Perry Jr. Federal Courthouse located at 901 Richland St. in Columbia.

Team members are Nathan Beasley (Best Witness for Rounds 1 and 3),Courtney Bowie, Felicia Canipe, Christian Hamilton, Hunter Hamvas, Crane Havens, Haven Lane (Best Witness for Round 2), Alyssa Lundy (Best Lawyer Round 2), Sydney Runyans, Trenton Smith (Best Lawyer for Round 3), Adam Stanaland, Taylor Treece (Best Lawyer for Round 1), and Trey Voltin. The team is coached by Robert Decerbo and Jill Fennel, Esq.

Sponsored by the South Carolina Bar Association, the High School Mock Trial Program is a hands-on exercise in learning about due process. It is most often conducted as an extracurricular activity but can also be incorporated into law, forensics or public speaking classes. The goal of mock trial is to educate students about the basis of our American judicial system and the mechanics of litigation. Through participation in the mock trial program, students strengthen basic skills such as listening, speaking, writing, reading and problem analysis. To learn more, visit www.scbar.org.
