The Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office annouced Saturday that it, the Bennettsville Police Department Narcotics Unit, the McColl Police Department, the U.S. Marshal’s Service and The State Law Enforcement Division had arrested 17 individuals from Bennettsville, McColl and Clio on drug-related charges ranging from possession of marijuana to distribution of crack cocaine.
Most of the arrests occurred Friday and Saturday. The arrests come after a nine-month investigation prompted by residents’ complaints of drug sales within Marlboro County. During Friday and Saturday, the Bennettsville Sheriff’s Office seized vehicles, various forms of ammunition (including assault rifles and pistols), money, crack and powder cocaine and controlled substances being used by suspects within the investigations.
Marlboro County Investigator Jamie G. Seales said the arrests mark a pivotal moment in the county’s fight against crime.
“A lot of people were arrested for second or third time offenses. By putting a couple of major distributors in jail, it’s going to slow down a lot of the crime and narcotic activity,” Seales said.
He noted, however, the job is not finished.
“We’re very pleased with it, but we know we’re a long way from accomplishing what we want to accomplish. We continue to encourage citizens to call and give us information,” he said, noting that much of the results of the investigation was helped by tips from citizens.
