Around 100 Georgetown County middle and high school students will be participating in a youth summit Friday.
This is the 11th year the county has hosted the summit which is sponsored by the school district and several youth agencies.
During the summit, the students will participate in various activities designed to teach them some valuable life lessons.
“We’re hoping they get lots of exposure, life skills, team building, working together, acceptance, and to let them know all things are possible,” said Shanna Scott, the education manager of the youth summit and director of the non-profit group Service Over Self.
Scott says principals of each county school pick students who they feel will benefit from taking part in the program.
Brendon Barber, the coordinator of Safe and Drug-Free Schools, says he’s seen young people make great strides after attending the summit. And, they can take the information they’ve learned and share it with their classmates.
“Part of education is about growth. And, who better for students to listen to than other students. So once you get them involved in the community and they bring their skills out of the classroom and from their environments and they talk to other kids – it’s just a win-win situation and a model for success,” Barber said.
