Doris S. Horinbein
Myrtle Beach -- Doris S. Horinbein, 79, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Frederick L. Horinbein whom she married April 27, 1949.
She was born Dec. 6, 1929 in Hemingway, the daughter of the late Arthur and Aline Shaw Spivey. Doris was valedictorian of her high school class and a star basketball player. Her family, including four brothers, moved to Marion, where she made many wonderful friends, married the love of her life, and raised her family. She was active in the community, an avid tennis player, golfer and winner of the local Women's Golf Championship.
Doris and her husband moved to Surfside Beach, almost 30 years ago after they founded Southlantic Water systems. She was a pioneer in the water treatment industry promoting drinking water appliances when it was not widely accepted or known to be needed.
She became a member of Glenns Bay Baptist Church where she and her husband were active for many years. Doris was a wonderful and caring wife, mother and lovingly called "Darcie" by grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, Larry Horinbein and his wife Patricia of Myrtle Beach; three daughters, Linda Toporek of Mt. Pleasant, Gale Horinbein of Summerville, Patrice Landrum of Little River; grandchildren, Frederick Hornibein II, Sarah Horinbein, Kelly Creighton, Candace, Alex, and Emily Toporek, Jeremy and Brittney Landrum; great-grandchildren, Ruby, Tribe, Ava Torprek, Chayce Stallings; her youngest brother, Cecil Spivey of Fork; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was on Sunday, March 1, 2009 in Glenns Bay Baptist Church, Surfside Beach.

Ella Mae T. Proctor
Marion -- Ella Mae Tanner Proctor, 81, wife of Mitchell E. Proctor, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 in her home after an illness. She was born Oct. 12, 1927 in Marion County, a daughter of the late John Gary Tanner and the late Tronnie Shelley Tanner.
Mrs. Proctor was a teacher with Marion Baptist Church Kindergarten for 26 years. She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Proctor, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Susie Shelley Proctor and her husband Van Worsham of Atlanta; a son, John Mitchell Proctor and his wife Joyce of Quinby; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were on Feb. 24 in Rose Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Bell, Dr Denley Caughman, the Rev. Willie Gillard and Dr. Kenneth Orbeck officiating. Services were directed by Smith-Collins Funeral Home.

Gertrude Davis
Marion – Mother Gertrude Davis Davis was born in Marion County in 1917 to the late Willie and Omega Rowell Davis. She was educated in the Rains-Centenary Community and was employed by Russell Stover Candies for many years.
On April 12, 1934, she married the late Robert Davis and they were the parents of Estella Sparks of Newark, N.J., and the late Irene and Lois Davis.
She accepted Christ at an early age, and joined the Household of Faith Holiness Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Feb. 12, 2009. Her great-grandson Evangelist Tyquan Sparks was the eulogist, and interment was at the Old Ford Cemetery at Gresham.
She is survived by 14 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and special friends in Johnsie Mae, Mary Jane, Rob, "Pap-Pap," and Alice.
James Burroughs
Thomasville -- James Burroughs “J.B.” Ray Jr., 62, a resident of Runnymeade Street in Thomasville died Feb. 22, 2009 at Thomasville Medical Center.
J.B. was born July 3, 1946 in Conway, a son of James B. and Ora Lee Allen Ray Sr. He has lived in the Davidson County area for the past 36 years, moving there from South Carolina. J.B. was retired form Flowers Bread Company and had previously worked at Winn Dixie and Food Lion.
His hobbies included spending time on his lap top computer, boating and NASCAR. J.B. was an avid Thomasville High School football fan as well as the Carolina Panthers. He was a collector of juke boxes and 45 rpm records.
He was a supporter of the Carolina Basset Hound Rescue and loved his basset hound K.C. J.B. was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Valley “Val” Allen. On Dec. 31, 2008, he married Harriet Mitchell who survives him.
Also surviving are his daughters, Tanya Gunter and husband Paul of Archdale, Amy Moody-Henderson, and husband James Lee of Dillon and Erika Ray of Thomasville; one son, James Burroughs “Charlie” Ray III of High Point; five grandchildren London Gunter, Kayla Moody, Jami Lee Henderson, Athena Gunter and Broderick “Brody” Ray; and one brother, L.C. Allen of Aynor.
During the visitation at J.C. Green and Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville. the family paused for a time of reflection and share memories offered by his son-in-law Paul Gunter.

James Butler
Centenary -– James Henry Butler, 46, died on Feb. 2, 2009 at McLeod Regional Medical Center of Florence. His parents were the late John Henry and Mary Ester Butler.
He was the brother of Dorothy Brunson and Phyllis Berry both of Latta, David Butler of Nesmith and the late Minnie Ruth Butler. "Magic," as he was affectionately called, graduated from Terrell's Bay High School in 1980, and as a Wildcat, earned Class A basketball honors, including the 1977 Sportsmanship Award, the 1979 MVP and All-Conference Awards and the 1980 All State Point Guard Award.
He attended the Good Hope AME Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Feb. 8, with Pastor Raye T. Nelson officiating.
Interment was at the Soul Chapel AME Church Cemetery at Gresham. He is survived by his son Adonis of Marion.
Jimmy Dale Martin
Columbia -- Jimmy Dale Martin, 54, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 in Lexington Medical Center, Lexington. He was born on Dec. 5, 1954 in Mullins.
He was the son of Irene Luther and the late H.M. Martin. Jimmy was a man of love and a servant of the Lord.
He loved his family, he loved his children and he loved people, even if they seemed undeserving. His love resonated through everyone and it never had to be earned.
His life was led in servitude. He served the people in his life without an inkling expected in return. He graduated from Green Sea Floyds High School as an honor graduate and was a Francis Marion Scholar in 1972.
He graduated from Francis Marion University with an economics degree in 1977. Jimmy worked for the IRS, for 11 years. Within his church community he was a deacon. Yet, never could there be an amounted standard to measure the greatness of this man.
His greatness was reflected by the strength of his heart. He loved in spite of himself and the sacrifices that he made to sustain the happiness of others around him were far greater than anything that any worldly accomplishment could measure.
His life was made significant and Christ reflected through him.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Fields Martin; daughters, Savannah Rae Kepley and Ashleigh Renee Martin; son, Ryan Cooper Martin; son-in-law, Justin Kyle Kepley; grandson, Kristian Dean Kepley; his sister, Lois Montgomery; and brothers, Gene Martin and Brian Martin.
A memorial service was in the Chapel at Gateway Baptist Church, in Irmo, on Feb. 21, 2009. The Rev. Don Brock officiated. Graveside services were on Feb. 22 at Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mullins, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.

Lee Chester Bostic
Marion -– Lee Chester Bostic Jr., 62 died on Feb. 9, 2009. "LC," as he was affectionately known, was the son of the late Annie Mae and Lee Chester Bostic Sr.
He was a 1966 graduate of Johnakin High School and served in the U.S. Army as a supply clerk. He joined St. John AME Church at an early age, and his funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill there on Feb. 15, 2009. Pastor Donnie McBride officiated and interment was at the Florence National Cemetery.
He is survived by his sisters Wendy Currie of Marion and Lee Ann Rogers of Ft. Washington, Md.; his brother, Jerome Bostic of Marion; and special friends in Bobbie Jean Legette, Jo Ann Edwards, Joe Holton and Richard Foxworth.
Richard Smith
Marion -– Richard Leroy Smith Jr., 55, died on Feb. 8, 2009. He was the son of Erleese Foxworth Smith Woodberry and the late Richard Leroy Smith Sr.
He was the brother of Harold Lee Smith, Ronny Ray Smith, Doris Clinton, Elizabeth Ann Smith, Janet Smith Coles, Joyce Lester, Karen Campbell Bethea and the late Clarence Smith. He graduated from South Florence High School, and joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He later worked as a nurse's aide.
A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Feb. 13, 2009 at the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel in Marion, with interment at the Florence National Cemetery.
He is survived by his children Mark Rowell, Juba Buey and Natalia Feely; and special friends in James Brown, Hiawatha Hudson and Dre and Latasha Pierce.
Sadie Mae Pee
Baltimore -– Sadie Mae Moore Pee was born on May 12, 1927 to the late Gary and Mary Magdalene Genwright Moore.
She was the sister of Louise Richardson of Gresham, Priscilla Rogers of Philadelphia, Fedlan Watson of Chester, Penn., and Nevater Sampson of Baltimore.
She was educated in Britton's Neck schools and graduated as valedictorian of her class. In the 1940's, she married the late Ezekiel Pee and they moved to Centenary. They were the parents of the late Lois Pee.
Later, they relocated to New York City. In the 1980's, they returned to Britton's Neck and lived with her aging mother. During this time, Sadie reunited with Bethel AME Church, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Feb. 14, 2009.
Pastor R.L. Brown officiated and interment was at Old Neck Cemetery at Britton's Neck.
Thomas Cooper Bethea
Florence -- Thomas Cooper Bethea, formerly of Dillon, died on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009 in McLeod Hospice House, Florence. Born in Dillon County, on Dec. 24, 1919, he was the son of Alpheus Victor and Martha Rebecca Cooper Bethea.
Mr. Bethea attended Dillon schools and graduated from Clemson University in 1941. He served as a Captain in the infantry in the U.S. Army during World War II.
After World War II, Mr. Bethea returned to Dillon and operated farms, tobacco warehouses and farm supply business with his brother. He was President of Bethea Distributing Co., Inc.
Mr. Bethea was a charter member of the Dillon Kiwanis Club and a George F. Hixson Fellow. He was a lifelong member of the Main Street United Methodist Church, where he was very active and served in various leadership positions and was a member of the Marvin Rast Sunday School Class.
Mr. Bethea was a member of the Benjamin Ryan Tillman Society at Clemson University. In his spare time, he enjoyed time at the beach, golfing with friends and traveling. For the past two years, he lived at the Methodist Manor of the Pee Dee in Florence,
Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Marjorie Hooks Bethea of Florence; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Cooper Bethea Jr., and his wife Dorothy of Dillon and James Frank Bethea and his wife Linda of Columbia; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie Bethea Weeks and her husband Garner of Briarcliffe Acres; grandchildren include Thomas Cooper Bethea III, McLean Gaddy Bethea and his wife Lindsay, Bronwen Elizabeth Bethea, Mary Marjorie Bethea and John Franklin Bethea.
Mr. Bethea is also survived by his sister, Lucinda Bethea Bostick of Sumter and was predeceased by his brother, Alpheus Victor Bethea Jr., of Latta.
A funeral was on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 at Main Street United Methodist Church, Dillon. Burial followed at Dothan Cemetery, Dillon County. Vivian Baccus
Marion -– Vivian Denise Baccus, 48, died on Feb. 10, 2009 at the Marion County Medical Center. She was the daughter of Rosa Mae Gunter and Robert Dingle.
A 1978 graduate of Marion High School, she joined Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church at an early age, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Feb. 16, 2009, with Pastor Henry McGill Jr. officiating.
Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery. She is survived by her children Salena Harris and Levern Baccus Jr.; her sisters, Linda Bell and Angela Gunter; and her brother, George Gunter.
